Oshodi Crash: Lagos Signals Clampdown on Speeding Tanker Drivers
Lagos State is moving to tighten enforcement against speeding tanker and truck drivers following a serious crash involving a heavy-duty vehicle conveying Compressed Natural Gas. The Lagos State Government warned operators of articulated vehicles to comply strictly with traffic laws and speed limits, stressing that public safety will not be compromised.
The warning was issued by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Sola Giwa, after a speeding truck collided with a privately owned car at the crest of Apakun Bridge inward Oshodi. Preliminary assessments showed that the truck violated established traffic safety standards before ramming into a moving Toyota Corolla, triggering severe traffic disruption and exposing nearby residents to significant risk.
Beyond gridlock, the economic cost of reckless driving remains high. Road crashes damage productivity, strain emergency services, and impose avoidable healthcare expenses on households and the state. In this incident, two pedestrians were struck, while the car’s driver sustained serious injuries and is receiving intensive medical care.
Giwa said officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority responded swiftly, rescuing victims and restoring order. Police personnel provided security support, while the Rapid Response Squad and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were deployed due to the truck’s combustible cargo.
The government warned that it will unleash the full weight of the law on offenders, describing persistent speeding by tanker and truck drivers as irresponsible and dangerous. Lagos said stricter enforcement is essential to protect lives, preserve infrastructure, and sustain an efficient transport system .
