Court Reserves Ruling On El-Rufai Bail Until March 31

Proceedings on the bail application of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, have been adjourned by a Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna to March 31, 2026, following arguments from both the prosecution and defence.

The adjournment was announced on Tuesday after counsel representing both sides presented their positions before the court, setting the stage for a ruling at a later date.

At the hearing, defence counsel, Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to admit the former governor to bail, arguing that such relief aligns with his constitutional rights. He maintained that granting bail would enable El-Rufai to adequately prepare for his defence as the case progresses.

The prosecution, however, opposed the request, insisting that the nature of the charges against the former governor is grave. Prosecuting counsel argued that releasing the defendant on bail at this stage could potentially interfere with ongoing investigations linked to the case.

The court did not deliver an immediate ruling but instead fixed March 31 for further proceedings, during which a decision on the bail application is expected.

The case remains at a preliminary stage, with legal arguments now focused on whether the defendant should remain in custody or be granted conditional release pending trial.
