Obi Faults Leadership As Nigeria Misses 2026 World Cup

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has attributed Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to a “conspicuous deficiency in political leadership,” arguing that the country is not short of talent but has failed to create an enabling environment for young people to develop and succeed.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential flagbearer made the remarks in a statement shared on his official social media page while reacting to the ongoing tournament. “Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup stems not from a lack of talent but from a conspicuous deficiency in political leadership that has failed to create an enabling environment for talent development,” Obi stated.

The Super Eagles were eliminated in the CAF playoff final in November 2025 after a 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo, losing 4-3 on penalties. DR Congo advanced while Nigeria watched from home. Nigeria had finished second in Group C with 17 points, one point behind group winner South Africa, who qualified directly.

Obi pointed to the strong presence of Nigerians and people of Nigerian descent at the tournament as proof of the country’s exceptional talent across different fields. He argued that many Nigerians achieving success internationally have done so despite challenges at home, adding that better leadership would help unlock even greater potential. He urged governments to deliberately invest in youth development, education, and sports for the country to compete favourably.

The former presidential candidate also praised Afrobeats star Davido for using the FIFA World Cup platform to draw global attention to Nigeria’s security situation. Obi noted that the singer appeared in a custom-made black leather jacket carrying the inscription “BRING THEM HOME” and the names of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers reportedly abducted by bandits in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. “By utilising his international platform, Davido effectively highlighted Nigeria’s security crisis, transcending mere entertainment,” Obi said.

The NDC candidate expressed confidence that Nigeria can overcome its current difficulties through responsible leadership and policies that create opportunities for young people, building a future where its talents thrive at home instead of elsewhere.
