Abuja Shaken Again as NGSA Confirms Earth Tremor

 

Fresh ground shaking in Nigeria’s capital on Tuesday morning has once again placed the Federal Capital Territory’s quiet but recurring seismic record under public scrutiny, with the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) confirming a light earth tremor that rattled several buildings before dissipating in five seconds.

The Seismic Monitoring Station at Utako recorded the event at exactly 11:23:27 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. According to the agency, the tremor originated from a depth of one kilometre and spread across a distance of four kilometres within five seconds. The NGSA classified it as a “light event of I to II magnitude on the Mercalli scale,” adding in its assessment that “this is a characteristic feature of a surface earth tremor that poses no threat to lives and properties except for the discomfort of the shake and fear of possible destruction.”

A statement signed on Wednesday by the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Lara Owoeye-Wise, said the Minister, Dr Dele Alake, had “directed the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) to provide hourly updates of the seismic developments around Abuja, the Federal Capital to him for regular review and possible escalation to other relevant agencies.”

The statement noted that Alake, who is currently in Washington DC engaging American investors on joint venture proposals in the solid minerals sector, urged residents “to go about their normal routine without anxiety,” and said other proactive measures had been deployed to safeguard residents and property. It added that the agency “will continue to monitor the situation while residents engage in normal activities.”

One technical point deserves attention. The Modified Mercalli scale referenced in the NGSA advisory measures observed intensity, meaning how strongly shaking is felt at the surface and what it does to structures, rather than the energy released at the source, which is expressed in local or moment magnitude on the Richter and related scales. An intensity of I to II sits at the lowest end of the twelve-point Mercalli range, describing shaking that is either not felt at all or noticed only by a few persons at rest, typically on upper floors. The one-kilometre focal depth is also significant: shallow events of this kind are felt more sharply over a very small radius, which explains a four-kilometre footprint and a five-second duration.

Global seismicity mapping, including United States Geological Survey data, has long classified West Africa and Nigeria as broadly aseismic, sitting far from active plate boundaries such as the Pacific Ring of Fire. Nigerian scholarship, however, has consistently rejected the idea that the country is earthquake free.

Peer reviewed reviews of Nigeria’s seismic history place the first widely reported tremor in 1933, with subsequent events in 1939, 1964, 1984, 1990, 1994, 1997, 2000 and 2006. Intensities ranged from III to VI on the Modified Mercalli scale. Only the 1984, 1990, 1994 and 2000 events were instrumentally recorded, returning body wave magnitudes of 4.3 to 4.5, local magnitudes between 3.7 and 4.2, and surface wave magnitudes of 3.7 to 3.9.

Northern Nigeria’s exposure sharpened with the August 2000 Jushi Kwari event and the September 2016 Kwoi tremor in Kaduna State. Then came Abuja’s defining episode. From September 5 to 7, 2018, vibrations were felt across Mpape and parts of Maitama, Wuse and Gwarinpa. Published analysis of that sequence computed a stress drop of 2.1 bar, fault displacement of 0.56 kilometre and a focal depth estimated between 10 and 15 kilometres. The then Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, responded by suspending quarrying, mining and borehole drilling in Mpape, Gwarinpa and Garki, while the NGSA, then led by Alex Ndubuisi Nwegbu, urged calm and announced the procurement of six earthquake monitoring seismographs.

Six years later, the capital shook again. Between September 13 and 17, 2024, the NGSA-5 station at Katampe captured what the agency’s Director General, Professor Olusegun Ige, described as approximately 48 separate events, with intensity and frequency rising sharply from September 13 to 16. The agency placed those tremors at III to IV on the Modified Mercalli scale, describing them as weak to light and of very low threat. Its field assessment concluded that “the tremors are a result of accumulated stress along the identified faults and released seismic energy, which may have traveled through associated fractures to areas where the tremors were felt around the FCT.” Multiple epicentres were located, most northeast of the station around the Mpape axis and a few southwest around Katampe. The main shock was logged at 11:18:37 p.m. with a local magnitude of 3.1 and a focal depth of 11 kilometres.

Nigerian geoscientific literature attributes most of the country’s tremors to reactivation of ancient basement structures, with the Ifewara Zungeru fault system frequently identified as the dominant natural feature. Researchers have also mapped NE-SW and NW-SE trending structures across northern Nigeria linked to the Romanche, Chain, Charcot and St Paul fracture zones extending from the Atlantic, interpreted as conduits through which seismic energy travels inland.

A February 2026 study published in the International Journal of Recent Development in Engineering and Technology by researchers attached to the National Space Research and Development Agency examined the Mpape subsurface using aeromagnetic data and source parameter imaging. It identified networks of NE-SW, NW-SE and N-S trending faults, and characterised the recorded waveforms as short duration, high frequency oscillations typical of shallow tremors sourced from the reactivation of pre-existing fracture zones.

Human activity remains part of the debate. Following the 2018 episode, a Federal Government committee recommended regulation of groundwater exploitation in Abuja through the indiscriminate sinking of boreholes. Quarrying, rock blasting and rapid construction in the hilly northeastern flank of the city have also been cited in academic and policy discussions as possible aggravating factors, though no official Nigerian finding has conclusively assigned causation.

Abuja’s detection network has expanded materially. In February 2024, Alake commissioned the Katampe facility as the country’s fifth seismic monitoring station, joining installations at the University of Abuja Gwagwalada, Nasarawa State University Keffi, Veritas University Bwari and the NGSA headquarters at Utako, with additional NGSA facilities in Kaduna and Ilorin.

Some Nigerian researchers have published probabilistic forecasts suggesting the country could experience stronger events, including projections of magnitudes approaching 7.0 within the 2025 to 2026 window at a stated probability of 36.79 per cent. Those projections remain contested within the scientific community and have not been adopted as official government risk assessments.

What is not contested is the regulatory gap. Nigeria’s building codes contain limited seismic design provisions, and researchers have repeatedly recommended microzonation studies, seismotectonic mapping and the relocation of heavy rock blasting away from residential districts. For now, the NGSA’s hourly reporting directive represents the government’s immediate response to a phenomenon that, since 2018, has stopped being treated as an anomaly in the Federal Capital.
