Former Barcelona and Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has announced the death of his wife, Bartina Koeman-Boddeveld, who died on Monday, 15 September 2026, at the age of 65.
Koeman confirmed the loss in a tribute posted on Instagram, describing Bartina as his “beautiful wife” and the family’s “dearest mother and grandmother”. “With intense sadness, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye,” he wrote, signing off on behalf of the Koeman family.
Bartina had lived with cancer for years, an illness her husband spoke about publicly and with care during his time in football. According to Dutch media reports, she was first diagnosed in 2010, recovered, then received a fresh diagnosis in 2018, and by 2023 the condition had become chronic as Koeman began his second spell in charge of the national team.
He had continued to reference her fight during his final months in the job. Before the 2026 World Cup, held across the United States, Canada and Mexico, Koeman said his wife was receiving treatment every Wednesday and enduring side effects for days afterwards. “If we reach the final, perhaps the doctors will allow her to travel, and that would be wonderful,” he said at the time.
FC Barcelona was among the first institutions to respond. “FC Barcelona and its supporters send their deepest condolences and affection to Ronald Koeman and his family for the passing of his wife, Bartina Koeman. May she rest in peace,” the club said in a statement.
The Netherlands national team, which Koeman led until stepping down after the World Cup, also paid tribute, acknowledging Bartina’s passing and offering support to the family. “We wish Ronald, their (grand)children, family, and other loved ones a great deal of strength and support in the face of this great loss,” the message read.
Koeman, 63, is one of the most recognised figures in Dutch football. He enjoyed a distinguished playing career, including a spell at Barcelona, before turning to management. As a coach he took charge of Barcelona between 2020 and 2021, and has also managed the Netherlands, Everton, Southampton and Ajax, among other clubs.
Bartina and Koeman had been together for decades and raised three children, Tim, Debbie and Ronald. The family has asked for privacy as they mourn.
