Abducted Kaduna Catholic Priest Regains Freedom after One Year in Captivity

The Journal Nigeria April 25, 2025

In a remarkable turn of events, Rev. Fr. Ibrahim Amos, the Catholic priest abducted nearly a year ago from St. Gerald Quasi Parish in Kurmin Risga, Kauru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, has been released unharmed. The Diocese of Kafanchan confirmed his freedom on Friday, sparking relief and celebration among the local community and well-wishers across different faiths.

The release of Fr. Amos comes after weeks of agonizing uncertainty that gripped the local community and extended to supporters nationwide. In an official statement signed by Chancellor Rev. Fr. Dr. Jacob Shanet, the Diocese expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who showed support – from members of various religious groups and local vigilantes to the Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and countless individuals who sent prayers and messages of solidarity. “Fr. Amos was released unharmed, bringing relief to the Catholic community and his family after weeks of uncertainty and emotional distress,” stated Rev. Fr. Dr. Jacob Shanet.

The collective response to Fr. Amos’s abduction was a testament to the widespread concern for the sanctity of human life. Social media platforms, interfaith groups, and community leaders joined forces to demand justice and improved security measures in a region long troubled by persistent unrest and abductions. “The outpouring of concern and solidarity from people of goodwill, both online and offline, has been overwhelming,” added Rev. Fr. Dr. Jacob Shanet.

Despite the joyous news, Fr. Amos’s ordeal has once again shed light on the security challenges in Kaduna State, particularly in Southern Kaduna. Local residents and community leaders have used the incident to renew their calls for robust security measures to prevent further acts of violence and abduction. The Diocese’s statement echoed these sentiments, urging continued prayers and concerted actions to protect vulnerable communities. “May the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Priests, and all the angels intercede for those still in captivity and lead them back safely to their families and communities,” the statement concluded.

The safe return of Rev. Fr. Amos is not just a personal victory but also a symbol of hope amid the ongoing struggle against insecurity in the region. As investigations continue and community leaders push for reforms, many see this event as a turning point and a rallying cry for lasting peace and safety in Kaduna State.

As residents and supporters celebrate the priest’s freedom, the renewed emphasis on improving local security offers hope that similar incidents may soon become a relic of the past. The entire community now looks forward to a future where freedom, dignity, and safety are safeguarded for all.
