Abia Tragedy: Father Sets Wife, Children Ablaze Over Alleged Infidelity

The Journal Nigeria May 20, 2025

A horrific case of domestic violence has shaken Abia State after a 40-year-old man, Udochi Amala, allegedly set his wife, Amarachi Amala, and their three children on fire in the early hours of Saturday, May 17, 2025.

The incident, which occurred in Onicha Ngwa community, Obingwa Local Government Area, resulted in the death of their one-year-old daughter, while Amarachi and two other children remain in critical condition. Unconfirmed reports suggest the wife and surviving children later succumbed to their injuries.

According to authorities, Udochi doused his family and home with a flammable substance before igniting the fire, citing suspicions of his wife’s infidelity. He reportedly accused Amarachi of receiving frequent calls from men he believed to be her lovers. In a chilling admission, Udochi stated, “I have an issue with my wife, and I did not know that it would get to this extent. I am tired of this life.’’

The suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended by villagers, who nearly lynched him before police intervened. The Abia State Police Command confirmed the arrest, with spokesperson DSP Maureen Chinaka noting, “Yes, the Police are aware. Investigation is ongoing”.

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Abia branch, condemned the act as a “gross violation of human rights and dignity.”

In a statement, FIDA Chairperson Njideka Aniawonwa and Secretary Eberechukwu Kanu Oji demanded a thorough investigation and justice for the victims, urging support for survivors of domestic violence

The tragedy has sparked outrage in Asa Umudim, Osisioma LGA—a location cited in related reports—where similar incidents of gender-based violence have occurred. The case reveals Nigeria’s ongoing struggle with domestic abuse, amplified by systemic challenges in protecting vulnerable individuals.

While this incident highlights local tensions, global parallels emerge. In the U.S., lawmakers recently rallied to restore funding for domestic violence programs under the Violence Against Women Act, emphasizing the universal need for robust survivor support systems.

The victims’ bodies have been moved to a mortuary, and FIDA has pledged legal aid to ensure accountability. Authorities continue to investigate, as advocates call for strengthened protections to prevent future tragedies.
