Singer and businessman Akon’s wife, Tomeka Thiam, has filed for divorce after nearly 29 years of marriage.

According to court documents filed in Los Angeles on September 11, 2025, Tomeka cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. The filing came just days before what would have been the couple’s 29th wedding anniversary.

The petition shows that Tomeka is seeking joint legal custody of their 17-year-old daughter, Journey, but wants primary physical custody with visitation rights granted to Akon. She is also requesting spousal support from the singer and asked that he not be entitled to any support from her. The official date of separation was listed as “to be determined.”

Akon, born Aliaune Badara Thiam, married Tomeka in 1996. The couple share one child, though Akon has publicly acknowledged fathering nine children with multiple partners and has spoken openly about practicing polygamy.
