Reports suggesting that Senate President Godswill Akpabio is bedridden in a London hospital have been firmly dismissed following a meeting with Senator Gbenga Daniel, who found him “hale and hearty.”
Daniel, who chairs the Senate Committee on Navy and represents Ogun East under the APC, said he made a brief stop in London to personally brief Akpabio on his planned return to Nigeria for the August 16 bye-election in Ogun State. The poll will decide a replacement for the late Hon. Adewumi Onanuga, former Deputy Whip of the House of Representatives, whose death created a vacancy for the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency seat.
“I came to inform you, Mr. Senate President, that I will be back home to take part in the bye-election,” Daniel told Akpabio. “There’s been talk that you’re unwell, but seeing you now tells a very different story. Congratulations, Your Excellency.”
According to Akpabio’s media aide, Jackson Udom, the Senate President warmly welcomed Daniel’s visit, praising the former governor’s decision to be actively involved in the contest.
“With the commitment of Governor Dapo Abiodun, your own political weight, and the dedication of other party leaders in Ogun State, the APC will keep the seat,” Akpabio assured. “You and the governor both hail from the constituency, so I have no doubt about the outcome. Congratulations in advance.”
On the swirling speculation over his health, Akpabio was dismissive: “If you listen to social media, you will go to war,” he said, smiling.
His remarks and public appearance are expected to quiet speculation over his health as political activities heat up ahead of the August 16 vote.
