Anambra Teen’s Alleged 10 Pregnancies in 5 Months Sparks Outcry

The Journal Nigeria May 7, 2025

Anambra State officials are appealing for public guidance after an 18-year-old apprentice allegedly impregnated 10 girls in just five months, including his former master’s daughter and a local salesgirl, in a case described as “beyond capacity” by authorities.

The shocking revelation came from Anambra’s Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, during a live social media broadcast on Wednesday. According to Obinabo, the teenager was sent to a trade apprenticeship three months prior but was dismissed after impregnating two girls connected to his workplace. His return to his rural village, however, escalated the crisis: within two months, eight additional girls reportedly became pregnant. “This boy was sent to learn a trade at 18, but within three months, he impregnated his master’s daughter and a salesgirl. After being dismissed, he returned home and impregnated eight more girls,” Obinabo stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “The problem is beyond my capacity—we need collective solutions.”

The boy’s mother reportedly sought intervention from the ministry, expressing fear over the stream of young women approaching their home. “Anytime I see a girl coming toward our house, my heart jumps,” she told Obinabo. “Please, I need help.” When questioned about his methods, the apprentice allegedly claimed he persuaded the girls by professing love and promising marriage once he achieved financial stability.

Obinabo, however, raised broader concerns, questioning whether “spiritual” influences or societal factors contributed to the pattern. The commissioner did not disclose identities or specific communities involved, citing privacy and ongoing efforts to address the fallout. She urged the public to propose solutions, stressing the legal and social complexities given the boy’s age and the number of affected families.

The case has ignited debate on social media, with users speculating on accountability, youth mentorship, and cultural norms. Meanwhile, the ministry continues to collaborate with local leaders to mediate between the families and explore preventive measures.

As Anambra grapples with this unprecedented situation, Obinabo’s appeal reveals a pressing question: How can communities protect vulnerable youth while addressing systemic challenges? For now, the search for answers continues.
