In the wake of mounting criticism directed at Senate President Godswill Akpabio following a heated altercation with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has come to his defense, urging the public to consider the context of the incident.
Blessing Agbomhere, the South-South Zonal Organising Secretary of the APC, expressed concern over the wave of insults targeting Akpabio on social media platforms. He emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum and respect for institutional leadership, especially within the legislative arm of government.
The controversy erupted during a Senate plenary session on February 20, 2025, when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan protested the unauthorized relocation of her seat. The situation escalated into a heated exchange, leading Akpabio to order her removal from the chamber, citing disorderly conduct.
In response to the incident, Agbomhere highlighted the need for legislators to adhere to established protocols and procedures. He argued that while dissent is a vital component of democratic discourse, it should be expressed within the bounds of parliamentary decorum. Agbomhere further noted that Akpabio’s actions were in line with his responsibilities to maintain order during legislative proceedings.
The incident has sparked a broader debate about internal dynamics within the Senate and the appropriate channels for addressing grievances. Some groups have criticized Akpoti-Uduaghan’s conduct, labeling it as unbecoming of a public official and calling for disciplinary measures.
Conversely, supporters of the senator argue that her actions were a justified response to perceived marginalization and attempts to silence her voice within the legislative body.
