In a recent development within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, the former Deputy National Chairman, has advised that the party’s 2027 presidential ticket should not be granted to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. George emphasized the importance of adhering to the party’s zoning principles to ensure equity and fairness.
George highlighted that the PDP’s constitution mandates the rotation of power between the North and South to promote unity and inclusivity. He pointed out that with former President Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner, having served two terms from 2015 to 2023, it is equitable for the presidency to shift to the South in the subsequent election cycles. This perspective aligns with the party’s commitment to balancing power dynamics across Nigeria’s diverse regions.
“Even in 2027, Atiku will be 81 years, and this is the time for him to embrace the concept of allowing the younger generation to run for the highest office in the land,” George remarked. “I have nothing personal against Alhaji Abubakar. He is my friend, but the truth must be told.”
George further asserted that adhering to the zoning principle is not just about regional representation but also about upholding the party’s constitution and the nation’s democratic ethos. He cautioned that disregarding this principle could lead to internal discord and diminish the party’s chances in future elections.
“We should not do anything that will destroy our party and the country,” George added. “In 2027, the concept of ‘Turn-by-Turn Nigeria Limited’ must be strictly followed by our party.”
This stance has sparked discussions within the PDP and the broader political landscape, highlighting ongoing debates about leadership, representation, and the future direction of Nigeria’s democracy.
