With a career spanning several decades, he has emerged as a highly influential figure, not only within his political party but also at the national level.

Party: All Progressives Congress
Previous offices: Governor of Lagos State (1999–2007), Member of the Senate of Nigeria (1992–1993)

Born on March 29, 1952, in Lagos, Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu came up in a humble background. He received his primary education at St. John’s Primary School, Aroloya, Lagos, and proceeded to the prestigious Government College, Lagos, for his secondary education. After completing his secondary education, Tinubu attended Richard J. Daley College, Chicago, Illinois, United States, where he studied Accounting. Tinubu’s foray into politics began in the late 1970s when he joined the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP). His political journey gained significant momentum in the early 1990s when he became a founding member of the pro-democracy group, the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). NADECO played a vital role in opposing military dictatorship and advocating for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu

In 1992, Tinubu contested and won a senatorial seat representing Lagos West under the platform of the Social Democratic Party. During his tenure as a senator, he became known for his commitment to progressive policies and his ability to build coalitions across party lines. Tinubu’s remarkable performance earned him the admiration of his constituents and positioned him as a formidable force in Nigerian politics. In 1999, with the transition to civilian rule, Tinubu contested and won the governorship election in Lagos State under the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD). As the governor of Lagos State, Tinubu embarked on a transformative agenda focused on infrastructure development, economic growth, and social welfare. He implemented policies that revitalised the state’s economy, improved education and healthcare, and ensured better living conditions for Lagos residents.

Tinubu’s eight-year tenure as the governor of Lagos State (1999-2007) left an indelible mark on the state’s development. His administration prioritised urban renewal projects, resulting in the transformation of Lagos into a modern metropolis. Notable infrastructure projects initiated during his tenure include the construction of the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, the expansion of the Lekki-Epe Expressway, and the creation of the Lekki Free Trade Zone.

Furthermore, Tinubu championed the establishment of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and the development of the Eko Atlantic City, a visionary project aimed at creating a world-class business and residential district. His administration also improved the state’s revenue generation through the implementation of the Land Use Charge and other tax reforms.

Tinubu’s astute political strategies and leadership qualities were instrumental in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a merger of several opposition parties in Nigeria. This political alliance successfully challenged the ruling party’s dominance and ultimately led to the victory of Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 presidential election, ending the 16-year rule of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Tinubu’s role as a political strategist and kingmaker cannot be overstated. His ability to build alliances, mobilise support, and influence key decisions earned him the respect and loyalty of many within his party. He played a crucial role in the election of numerous governors, senators, and other political officeholders across Nigeria.

Bola Tinubu

In 2022, Tinubu made known his intentions to run for presidency in the 2023 presidential election under the All Progressives Party. His movement was supported by many Nigerians leading to his notable victory; defeating Atiku Abubakar of PDP and Peter Obi of Labour Party (LP). On the 1st of March, 2023, The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) pronounced Bola Ahmed Tinubu winner of the 2023 presidential election and he officially commenced his administration on 29 May 2023 following the inauguration ceremony held in Eagle Square, Abuja.

Beyond his political achievements, Tinubu has also made significant contributions to the socio-economic development of Nigeria. He established the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Foundation, a non-profit organisation focused on poverty alleviation, education, and healthcare. The foundation has implemented various programs and initiatives aimed at empowering vulnerable groups and promoting social welfare. Tinubu’s enduring impact on Nigerian politics can be attributed to his ability to inspire and mentor young leaders. Many political figures, including governors and legislators, have been influenced by his guidance and political acumen. His role in nurturing and supporting emerging leaders has been pivotal in ensuring the continuity of progressive governance in Nigeria. Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s career as a politician and statesman has been characterised by strategic vision, transformative leadership, and a commitment to democratic values. From his early involvement in pro-democracy activism to his groundbreaking achievements as the governor of Lagos State, his influential role in national politics, and also currently as the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic.Tinubu’s impact is promised to leave an indelible mark on Nigerian politics.
