Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has declared Monday, November 24, 2025, as a statewide day of fasting and prayer for peace and prosperity in the state and across Nigeria.
Zulum made the announcement in a televised address aired on Saturday by Channels Television. His call comes amid a new wave of attacks on schools and religious institutions across northern Nigeria.
In recent days, at least two worshippers were killed and others abducted in a church attack in Kwara State, forcing the closure of schools in four local government areas. In Kebbi State, 25 girls were kidnapped from a boarding school in Maga, while a vice-principal was killed. In Niger State, 303 children and 12 teachers were abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, in a large-scale kidnapping.
Addressing residents, Zulum described himself as “not just your governor but a fellow citizen with a profound sense of patriotism,” urging unity in sustaining peace.
“For the past 15 years, Borno State has been in the global spotlight owing to the Boko Haram insurgency. This affected every segment of our society, displacing millions and disrupting livelihoods,” he said.
The governor commended the resilience of the people and their support for security agencies, noting that relative peace in recent years has enabled improved agricultural output.
“Farmers have been able to cultivate crops expected to sustain them for the next one to two years. The government remains committed to supporting farmers with inputs and agrochemicals to ensure year-round farming and food sufficiency,” he said.
While acknowledging sporadic attacks, Zulum urged residents to remain steadfast, saying security efforts must be backed by prayers.
“I call upon every resident of Borno State, regardless of faith, to join in prayer for lasting peace and prosperity in our beloved state and Nigeria,” he said.
He added that his administration would continue to support security forces, strengthen community vigilance and explore dialogue where possible without compromising public safety.
The declaration follows a similar statewide fast and prayer held in May 2025, which Zulum personally led in Rann, Kala Balge Local Government Area, one of the communities worst hit by insurgency.
