Leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have voluntarily stepped down to allow former Senate President David Mark and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola to take the reins of the party in a bid to reposition it ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This was disclosed by the founding National Chairman of the party, Dr. Ralph Nwosu, during the official unveiling of the ADC as the platform for Nigeria’s opposition coalition. The high-profile event was held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Wednesday.
Nwosu said the move was part of a strategic effort to unite the opposition and provide a credible alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“We all decided to resign so that Mark, Aregbesola, and others can lead us to the Villa,” Nwosu declared. “We also approved Mark as National Chairman and Aregbesola as the National Secretary of the party. When you look at the two of them and their commitment to this country, you’ll see that this is a new beginning. They will reposition the party and Nigeria.”
David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola were formally announced as Interim National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, of the ADC-backed opposition coalition.
The development is seen as a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, with top political figures from various opposition parties rallying around the ADC to form a united front in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
