Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The development was confirmed in a Facebook post on Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah.
According to Alabrah, the governor resigned from the PDP alongside the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, and all PDP members in the state legislature.
Diri’s resignation ends months of speculation surrounding his alleged plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), although Alabrah did not disclose the political party the governor intends to join.
Reliable sources said that the governor made the announcement during the weekly State Executive Council meeting held inside Government House, Yenagoa, on Wednesday.
It was also gathered that the governor has formally submitted his resignation letter to the party.
The latest development follows reports of growing discontent within the Bayelsa PDP, amid speculations of high-profile defections in recent weeks.
When contacted for comments, Alabrah declined to speak, saying, “I cannot talk now.”
Efforts to reach the Bayelsa State PDP Chairman, Mr. Solomon Agwanana, were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that all members of the State Executive Council have also tendered their resignations alongside the governor.
As of press time, the PDP had not issued an official statement on the matter.
