The federal government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away last week in a London hospital.
The announcement was made on Monday by Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, in a brief statement released to the press.
Buhari, who served two terms as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, died at the age of 82 following a prolonged illness. His passing has drawn tributes from across the country and beyond, particularly from the northern region where he remained a deeply respected figure long after leaving office.
Tuesday’s holiday is expected to allow citizens to reflect on Buhari’s legacy and contributions to national development, particularly in the areas of anti-corruption, infrastructure expansion, and security reforms.
Further details regarding official commemorative events are expected to be announced by the presidency.
