In a dramatic turn of events, Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has been released from a UK prison and has returned to Nigeria. According to reports, she arrived back home on Tuesday, sparking celebrations and prayers for her husband’s safe return.
The Ekweremadus were convicted in May 2023 for their involvement in organ harvesting and trafficking, with Ike receiving a 10-year sentence and Beatrice getting six years. The couple had attempted to buy a kidney from a young Nigerian boy to donate to their daughter Sophia.
Their conviction was a landmark case, being the first under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act 2015. The sentencing followed pleas from prominent figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Beatrice’s release has brought relief to her family and supporters, who are now praying for Ike’s safe return. The development has also sparked renewed interest in the case, with many calling for Ike’s release.
