Olusegun Adeyemo
The revered Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has joined his ancestors at the age of 90.
Vanguard reliably gathered that the first-class traditional ruler passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, sending shockwaves across the ancient city of Ibadan and beyond.
Though official confirmation from the Olubadan-in-Council was still awaited at press time, palace sources and close associates have confirmed the monarch’s passing, describing it as the end of an era in the history of Ibadanland.
Oba Olakulehin, who ascended the throne in 2024, following the passing of his predecessor Oba Lekan Balogun, was known for his deep wisdom, calm disposition, and commitment to traditional values.
Before becoming Olubadan, he had served in various capacities within the Olubadan chieftaincy hierarchy, steadily rising through the ranks in accordance with the unique and highly structured Ibadan traditional system.
His reign, though brief, was marked by calls for unity, development, and cultural preservation within Ibadanland.
As news of his death spreads, tributes have begun to pour in from traditional institutions, political leaders, and Ibadan indigenes at home and in the diaspora.
Many described Oba Olakulehin as a custodian of heritage, whose life symbolized the resilience and rich traditions of the Yoruba people.
Details regarding funeral arrangements and official mourning rites are expected to be announced soon by the Olubadan-in-Council and the Oyo State Government.
Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin’s death comes just two days after he marked his 90th birthday. He was officially presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024, becoming the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
