Former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar has said that many officials who served under the late President Muhammadu Buhari failed to live up to the discipline and integrity that defined his leadership. Speaking from London shortly after Buhari’s death, Abdulsalami described the late Nigerian leader as a sincere, incorruptible figure whose legacy remains deeply rooted in the nation’s history.
“We were in the same hospital,” he revealed. “Unfortunately, I had just been discharged when I heard the news of his death. I quickly returned to see the family and support preparations for his journey home.”
Buhari passed away at 82 after a brief illness in a London clinic. National honours are being prepared ahead of his state burial, scheduled for Tuesday. His death has triggered a wave of mourning across political, military, and diplomatic circles.
Reflecting on their long-standing relationship, Abdulsalami said he first met Buhari in 1962 when they both joined the Nigerian military. “He was my senior. During the civil war, we served in the same sector,” he said.
Abdulsalami described Buhari as principled, reserved, and fiercely committed to national service. “You could trust Buhari with anything on this earth, and he would not betray you. As a military ruler, he introduced the War Against Indiscipline to restore order. Nigerians were more respectful, and society was more orderly under that regime.”
He also praised Buhari’s second stint as president following his 2015 democratic election, noting his consistency in pursuing anti-corruption and governance reforms. However, Abdulsalami admitted that Buhari’s efforts were often frustrated by members of his own administration.
“During his democratic tenure, he tried his best to fight corruption again,” he said. “Unfortunately, most of the officers who served with him were found wanting. They didn’t do as much as he expected of them.”
Describing Buhari’s death as a “big blow to Nigeria,” Abdulsalami stressed its significance not only for his family but for the entire country. “President Tinubu has asked the Vice President to accompany the body back to Nigeria. That alone shows you the magnitude of this loss.”
He added that Buhari’s legacy was defined by duty, loyalty, and a disciplined vision for Nigeria. “Despite his quiet nature, he was strong in character and consistent in principle. We have lost a patriot who tried to make Nigeria better.”
National flags remain at half-mast across the country, while the federal government, in consultation with the family, is expected to release a full schedule of burial arrangements.
