Cholera Outbreak Kills Four in Plateau Communities; Hospital Accused of Neglect

The Journal Nigeria May 12, 2025

Mathew Amaechi

A deadly cholera outbreak has claimed four lives in Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, with multiple residents hospitalized and allegations of medical negligence further complicating the crisis. The outbreak, confirmed by local authorities on Monday, has sparked urgent health interventions and outcry from affected families. Bokkos LGA Executive Chairman, Mr. Amalau Amalau, disclosed to the media that communities including Hurti, Bokkos West, Bokkos Central, and Mangol have reported cases. “We have lost four persons to this outbreak, while others are recuperating or have been discharged,” Amalau stated.

Primary healthcare centers and cottage hospitals are collaborating to manage patients, though resources remain strained. Amid the emergency, a grieving husband accused a local hospital of refusing treatment to his wife unless he paid ₦500,000, alleging the demand led to her death. Hospital management denied the claim, insisting no patient is turned away due to payment issues.

The allegation has fueled anger among residents already battling the outbreak, raising concerns about healthcare access during public health crises. Chairman Amalau urged residents to adhere to hygiene protocols: “Practice handwashing, clean water consumption, and report symptoms immediately.”

Health teams are conducting awareness campaigns and disinfecting high-risk areas to curb transmission. As Plateau State grapples with the outbreak, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has been alerted, though official reinforcements are yet to arrive. Local officials warn that heavy rains and poor sanitation could exacerbate the spread, calling for state and federal aid.
