A Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday granted bail to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in the sum of N50 million following her arraignment over alleged defamation.
The senator, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, was directed to provide one surety of reasonable integrity who must reside within the Federal Capital Territory and own a landed property specifically within the Abuja Municipal Area Council.
Justice Christopher Oba, who presided over the matter, ruled that the bail conditions must be met before Akpoti-Uduaghan can be released from custody. He emphasized that the court was inclined to grant bail to ensure the defendant’s right to liberty, noting that the allegations against her are bailable offenses.
Akpoti-Uduaghan appeared in court earlier in the day, drawing attention from political observers and supporters. She has maintained her innocence, stating that the charges are politically motivated.
The case has been adjourned to July 10 for further hearing. Her legal team has assured that efforts are underway to fulfill the bail conditions promptly. This development marks the latest in a string of legal and political battles involving the suspended senator, whose outspoken stance on governance and transparency in Kogi State has made her both a prominent figure and a controversial one.
