In a move to leverage the expertise of its global citizens, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu officially inaugurated the Cross River State Diaspora Commission, marking a pivotal step toward engaging overseas indigenes in state policies and development initiatives.

The ceremony, held at the Governor’s Office in Calabar, reveals the administration’s commitment to integrating diaspora contributions into the state’s growth agenda.

Governor Otu emphasized the commission’s critical role in uniting Cross Riverians abroad with local development efforts, stating, “This commission will serve as a bridge, managing our diaspora community and elevating Cross River’s global image.” He urged immediate action, adding, “Your task is vital—give it your best shot. We expect swift results built on the foundation laid today.”

The newly established body aims to foster investment, cultural exchange, and partnerships by linking the state government with its diaspora network. Key objectives include promoting unity among overseas citizens, facilitating developmental projects, and positioning Cross River as a hub for foreign relations and investments.

Otu Esu Okor, Chairman of the Diaspora Commission, hailed the appointment as a “privileged call to service,” revealing ongoing discussions with international partners. “We are grateful to Governor Otu for this platform,” Okor stated. “Our talks with diaspora stakeholders aim to channel investments and expertise homeward. Failure is not an option.”

The initiative has sparked optimism among stakeholders, with expectations of increased remittances, knowledge transfer, and collaborative projects. By tapping into the diaspora’s potential, Cross River joins Nigerian states like Abia and Anambra in formalizing efforts to harness global networks for local development.
