A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ado Ekiti has granted bail to human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, in the sum of ₦30 million. Farotimi was arrested earlier this month for allegedly defaming Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder of Afe Babalola University.
Farotimi, who had been remanded in a correctional centre in Ado Ekiti, arrived at the court premises on Friday morning amid heavy security presence. A viral video clip showed the human rights lawyer being conveyed to the court in a prison van with a police escort, where he was greeted by a cheering crowd.
The magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, had reserved a ruling on the bail application until December 20. Farotimi had pleaded not guilty to the 14-count charge preferred against him by the Ekiti State Police. His counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, had filed a preliminary objection asking the court to strike out the charge, arguing that the offence of defamation is not recognized under the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
Farotimi’s arrest had sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians calling for his immediate release. Prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and politician Omoyele Sowore had also advocated for his release.
