Former Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Ayoola Makanjuola, has emphasized the importance of early preparation as the Super Eagles gear up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
Speaking in an interview with The Journal Nigeria in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Makanjuola said timely and strategic planning will play a critical role in the team’s performance, noting that the Super Eagles should draw motivation from the resilience and recent success of the Super Falcons.
“The Lord that did it for the Super Falcons will also assist the Super Eagles,” Makanjuola said. “We just have to start the preparation now. If we delay even a little, it may affect their chances.”
The Super Falcons recently clinched their tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, a feat that Makanjuola believes should inspire the men’s national team. He expressed confidence that the Super Eagles would be eager to replicate that level of success, given the pride the Falcons have brought to the nation.
Makanjuola also praised President Bola Tinubu for honoring outstanding athletes and fulfilling past financial commitments.
“President Bola Tinubu just paid some outstanding fees,” he said. “Paying on time is much better than delays. It shows seriousness and motivates the players.”
The former commissioner called on all relevant football authorities to collaborate and ensure that the Super Eagles are well-equipped—technically, mentally, and physically—before heading into the qualifiers.
The Super Eagles are expected to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign later this year, with high hopes of making a strong return to the global stage after missing the 2022 edition.
