Residents of Okemesi-Ekiti, headquarters of Okemesi/Ido-Ile Local Council Development Area, LCDA, in Ekiti State, have called for the reinstatement of banking services in the town, more than a decade after a violent robbery incident led to the closure of the community’s only bank branch.
The 2013 robbery, which claimed two lives and left several others injured, prompted the permanent shutdown of the facility, leaving the town without direct access to banking services ever since.
At the third Socio-Economic Summit and investiture ceremony of new executives for the 2025-2027 term, members of The Likes Group TLG, a leading civic organization in the town, expressed concern over the long-standing absence of banking institutions and the resulting strain on local commerce and development.
Speaking at the event, the Mayor of the group and former Deputy Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Adesina Animasaun, stressed the need for functional banking to sustain economic growth. He disclosed that plans were underway to collaborate with a private university in the community to facilitate the return of banking operations.
He reiterated the group’s long-term commitment to supporting the town’s economic revival and improving livelihoods, especially for unemployed youth, students, farmers, traders, and artisans.

The traditional ruler of Okemesi-Ekiti, Oba Gbadebo Adedeji, applauded the group’s role in promoting the socio-economic advancement of the town. He described The Likes Group as one of the most active civic bodies in the area and encouraged other community associations to adopt a similar approach.
Oba Adedeji also commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his administration’s contributions to the state’s development and stated that the governor had earned the support for a second term.
Delivering the keynote address, Bayo Ajijola, Chairman/CEO of the Conference for Africa Studies and lead discussant at the event, praised The Likes Group for spearheading the movement for the town’s economic renewal.
