Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has travelled to the United Kingdom for medical treatment after reportedly falling ill last week.
Reliable sources confirmed that Edun departed Abuja on Monday night aboard a commercial flight to Lagos, before connecting to London via British Airways later that evening.
Contrary to widespread social media reports suggesting the minister suffered a stroke and was flown abroad in critical condition, credible officials said he was stable and travelled without security aides, indicating his condition was not severe.
A senior source in the Ministry of Finance said that Edun decided to consult his doctors in the UK “for proper medical evaluation and rest.”
“He is in stable condition. But he decided to go abroad for treatment. He will spend some time and return to his desk afterwards,” the source stated.
The Presidency had on Sunday announced that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, would now lead Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., following Edun’s “indisposition.”
Edun, a key member of President Bola Tinubu’s economic team, has been at the forefront of several ongoing fiscal and monetary reforms aimed at stabilising the nation’s economy.
Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Chief Sunday Dare, has dispelled rumours suggesting that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, suffered a stroke.
The presidential aide affirmed that the minister is in good condition and recovering well after personally speaking with him on Monday evening.
In a post on his verified X handle, @SundayDareSD, the former Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs wrote: “Moments ago, I got off the phone with Nigeria’s Finance Minister/COE, Mr. Wale Edun, in Abuja.”
“Over a bowl of Amala, we spoke for a few minutes with assurances he was getting better. I wished him the best of health”. Sunday Dare Alamala said
