The Federal Government has announced a seven-year moratorium on the creation of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
The decision, aimed at addressing the proliferation of under-utilised institutions, overstretched resources, and a decline in academic quality, was approved during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
President Bola Tinubu presided over the meeting, where Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, presented the policy proposal leading to the ban.
According to the Minister, the government’s focus over the next seven years will be on strengthening existing tertiary institutions, ensuring they are adequately staffed, funded, and equipped to meet global academic standards.
Further details on implementation and possible reviews of existing institutions are expected in the coming days.
