FG’s Summons: Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Lawyers Vow to Present Factual Evidence

The Journal Nigeria May 24, 2025

Ola Akinwunmi

The legal team of suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has received a formal summons in a case filed against her by the Federal Government over alleged defamatory remarks. The suit, marked CR/297/25, was filed at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, accusing the senator of making imputations that could harm the reputation of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

The Federal Government has listed several witnesses, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, and investigating police officers.

In a statement, Dr. Ehiogie West-Idahosa (SAN) confirmed receipt of the summons and pledged to prepare all “factual and statutory defenses” available to the lawmaker during the trial. The legal team will fully prepare and present their case to defend Natasha against the allegations.

Natasha was suspended from the Senate on March 6 for “gross misconduct” following a seating arrangement altercation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The lawmaker has since filed multiple petitions and leveled fresh allegations against Akpabio, who has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police over the assassination allegation made against him by Natasha.

The case highlights the ongoing conflict between Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The outcome of the trial will depend on the evidence presented by both parties. Natasha’s legal team is determined to defend her against the allegations, and the case is expected to unfold in the coming weeks.
