Five Inmates Recaptured After Daring Kogi Prison Break

The Journal Nigeria March 24, 2025

Ola Akinwunmi

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the recapture of five out of twelve inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, following a security breach early Monday morning.

In an official statement, NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar revealed that the escape occurred when a group of inmates tampered with padlocks in one section of the facility, creating an opportunity for twelve individuals to flee.Upon learning of the breach, Acting Comptroller General of Corrections Sylvester Nwakuche promptly mobilized a response team in collaboration with heads of security agencies and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Kogi State. Security personnel were immediately deployed to secure the facility, restore order, and initiate a manhunt for the escapees.

As of this moment, five of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining seven and bring them to justice,” the statement confirmed.

The NCoS has launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the prison break. Additionally, a nationwide security audit of all correctional facilities is underway to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Acting Controller General of Corrections has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape. Additionally, a security audit is being conducted across all correctional facilities nationwide to prevent future occurrences,” the statement added.

Authorities have assured the public that necessary steps are being taken to reinforce security measures at custodial centres across the country. They have also urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to security agencies to assist in the recapture of the remaining inmates.

This latest incident highlights ongoing security concerns within Nigeria’s correctional system, raising questions about the effectiveness of existing measures in preventing prison breaks. While the successful recapture of five inmates is a positive step, security agencies remain under pressure to ensure the swift apprehension of the remaining escapees.

Authorities continue to appeal for public vigilance and cooperation in their efforts to track down and bring all fugitives to justice.
