In a shocking turn of events, Olukayode Salako, the former chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, has announced that he will no longer support the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, if he runs again in 2027. Salako played a crucial role in LP’s performance in the 2023 presidential election in Lagos, where Obi secured a surprise victory over Bola Tinubu.
However, Salako’s relationship with the LP soured after he and five others were suspended indefinitely over allegations of anti-party activities during the general elections. He subsequently resigned from the party, citing persistent accusations of being a mole for Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In an exclusive interview, Salako revealed that he has returned to the APC, a party he has been a part of since 2014. He stated, “I am no longer on the side of Peter Obi… When you are in a party, and there is no trust in that place, then there is no reason to continue to operate in that place.”
Salako’s decision is likely to have significant implications for the LP and Obi’s potential 2027 presidential campaign. As a former key player in the party, Salako’s departure and decision to support the APC may influence other party members and supporters.
