Galatasaray Take Seven Point Lead As Osimhen Sets Sights On Liverpool

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen says Galatasaray S.K. will approach their upcoming UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash against Liverpool F.C. with renewed confidence following a decisive Istanbul derby victory over Beşiktaş J.K..

The Turkish champions secured a 1–0 win in the derby on Saturday after Osimhen headed home the only goal of the match, bringing an end to Beşiktaş’ 18-match unbeaten run. The result also strengthened Galatasaray’s position in the Turkish Süper Lig title race by opening a seven-point gap over closest challengers Fenerbahçe S.K..

Osimhen’s first-half header marked his 11th league goal of the season and extended his current run of goal involvement to eight consecutive league appearances. Across that sequence, the Nigerian forward has scored eight goals and provided four assists, matching the longest streak of his professional career.

That earlier run came during his prolific period with S.S.C. Napoli between January and February 2023, when he played a decisive role in the club’s domestic success.

Attention has now shifted to Galatasaray’s forthcoming Champions League encounter with Liverpool, one of the competition’s most successful clubs with six European titles.

Speaking in comments published on Galatasaray’s official YouTube channel, Osimhen described the upcoming fixture as a major test while expressing confidence in his team’s current form.

“It’s beautiful to play this type of team in the Champions League,” the striker said.

“Of course, it gives us some sort of satisfaction knowing that we are playing one of the best teams in the world. But we are also one of the best teams.”

Osimhen pointed to the derby victory as evidence of the squad’s resilience, particularly after Galatasaray continued to defend their lead despite being reduced to ten men during the contest.

“I think with the way we played today, with the strength and togetherness we showed on the pitch, even after going a man down, we showed great qualities,” he said.

“We will carry this momentum into the next Champions League game and give everything. I think we also have an edge in front of our fans. Their support will go a long way.”

The 27-year-old has been central to Galatasaray’s European campaign this season. Across eight Champions League appearances, he has registered seven goals and two assists.

One of those goals came in a 1–0 victory over Liverpool earlier in the group stage of the competition, a result that boosted the Turkish side’s progress in the tournament.

Osimhen also delivered the decisive strike in Galatasaray’s previous Champions League fixture against Juventus F.C., further underlining his importance to the team’s attacking line.

Earlier in the season, the Nigerian striker publicly outlined the club’s ambition to compete beyond domestic dominance.

“I spoke with the president when I arrived here, and we agreed that we want to make a statement in the Champions League,” he said.

“We’ve dominated the Turkish league for years, but now we want to show that we can compete with the best teams in Europe.”

Galatasaray remains one of Turkey’s most decorated clubs and has historically sought to assert a stronger presence in European competitions. The club famously won the UEFA Cup Final 2000, becoming the first Turkish team to lift a major European trophy.

Osimhen’s arrival last summer, reportedly for a record transfer fee for the Istanbul club, was widely interpreted as part of a broader attempt to strengthen the squad’s competitiveness at continental level.

Since joining the Turkish champions, the Nigerian international has quickly established himself as one of the team’s most influential players and a favourite among supporters.

The striker will be expected to play a decisive role again when Galatasaray face Liverpool in the round of 16 first leg, with the return fixture scheduled to take place at Anfield in England.

Meanwhile, transfer speculation surrounding Osimhen continues to gather pace ahead of the next European transfer window.

Reports published by The Athletic indicate that FC Barcelona are monitoring the Nigerian forward as a possible option if veteran striker Robert Lewandowski leaves the Spanish side during the summer.

According to the report, Barcelona’s sporting hierarchy are said to admire Osimhen’s pace, physical strength and finishing ability, qualities believed to align with the club’s evolving attacking style.

Several other European clubs are also reported to be observing the striker’s situation, including FC Bayern Munich, Juventus F.C. and Chelsea F.C..
