Galatasaray Take Seven Point Lead As Osimhen Sets Sights On Liverpool
Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen says Galatasaray S.K. will approach their upcoming UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash against Liverpool F.C. with renewed confidence following a decisive Istanbul derby victory over BeÅiktaÅ J.K..
The Turkish champions secured a 1ā0 win in the derby on Saturday after Osimhen headed home the only goal of the match, bringing an end to BeÅiktaÅā 18-match unbeaten run. The result also strengthened Galatasarayās position in the Turkish Süper Lig title race by opening a seven-point gap over closest challengers FenerbahƧe S.K..
Osimhenās first-half header marked his 11th league goal of the season and extended his current run of goal involvement to eight consecutive league appearances. Across that sequence, the Nigerian forward has scored eight goals and provided four assists, matching the longest streak of his professional career.
That earlier run came during his prolific period with S.S.C. Napoli between January and February 2023, when he played a decisive role in the clubās domestic success.
Attention has now shifted to Galatasarayās forthcoming Champions League encounter with Liverpool, one of the competitionās most successful clubs with six European titles.
Speaking in comments published on Galatasarayās official YouTube channel, Osimhen described the upcoming fixture as a major test while expressing confidence in his teamās current form.
āItās beautiful to play this type of team in the Champions League,ā the striker said.
āOf course, it gives us some sort of satisfaction knowing that we are playing one of the best teams in the world. But we are also one of the best teams.ā
Osimhen pointed to the derby victory as evidence of the squadās resilience, particularly after Galatasaray continued to defend their lead despite being reduced to ten men during the contest.
āI think with the way we played today, with the strength and togetherness we showed on the pitch, even after going a man down, we showed great qualities,ā he said.
āWe will carry this momentum into the next Champions League game and give everything. I think we also have an edge in front of our fans. Their support will go a long way.ā
The 27-year-old has been central to Galatasarayās European campaign this season. Across eight Champions League appearances, he has registered seven goals and two assists.
One of those goals came in a 1ā0 victory over Liverpool earlier in the group stage of the competition, a result that boosted the Turkish sideās progress in the tournament.
Osimhen also delivered the decisive strike in Galatasarayās previous Champions League fixture against Juventus F.C., further underlining his importance to the teamās attacking line.
Earlier in the season, the Nigerian striker publicly outlined the clubās ambition to compete beyond domestic dominance.
āI spoke with the president when I arrived here, and we agreed that we want to make a statement in the Champions League,ā he said.
āWeāve dominated the Turkish league for years, but now we want to show that we can compete with the best teams in Europe.ā
Galatasaray remains one of Turkeyās most decorated clubs and has historically sought to assert a stronger presence in European competitions. The club famously won the UEFA Cup Final 2000, becoming the first Turkish team to lift a major European trophy.
Osimhenās arrival last summer, reportedly for a record transfer fee for the Istanbul club, was widely interpreted as part of a broader attempt to strengthen the squadās competitiveness at continental level.
Since joining the Turkish champions, the Nigerian international has quickly established himself as one of the teamās most influential players and a favourite among supporters.
The striker will be expected to play a decisive role again when Galatasaray face Liverpool in the round of 16 first leg, with the return fixture scheduled to take place at Anfield in England.
Meanwhile, transfer speculation surrounding Osimhen continues to gather pace ahead of the next European transfer window.
Reports published by The Athletic indicate that FC Barcelona are monitoring the Nigerian forward as a possible option if veteran striker Robert Lewandowski leaves the Spanish side during the summer.
According to the report, Barcelonaās sporting hierarchy are said to admire Osimhenās pace, physical strength and finishing ability, qualities believed to align with the clubās evolving attacking style.
Several other European clubs are also reported to be observing the strikerās situation, including FC Bayern Munich, Juventus F.C. and Chelsea F.C..
