Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has moved to douse rising tensions as he assured workers that retirees from July 2, 2025, would receive their benefits immediately under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
Abiodun, who met with organised labour to resolve issues fueling the ongoing strike, unveiled a 10-year phased payment plan designed to clear outstanding contributions and secure future retirements.
Under the arrangement, the first phase will run from 2025 to 2030, while the second phase will cover 2030 to 2035—extending beyond his tenure and that of his immediate successor.
“What is key is that we have decided that in phase one, we will pay outstanding contributions for retirees who have retired from July 2, 2025, to July 2030. We will make that immediate payment,” the governor said, stressing that phase two would follow for retirees between 2030 and 2035.
He also confirmed that the gratuity scheme will end on July 2, 2025, with all consolidated salaries reverting to the CPS.
Abiodun disclosed that N8 billion in inherited leave allowances from 2014 to 2022 would be paid in tranches, while promotion arrears for 2023 and 2024 would be cleared starting September and December 2025, respectively.
The governor assured labour leaders of plans to review basic salaries upward, pledging, “We will look into this to ensure fairness for our workers.”
Reacting, NLC State Chairman, Comrade Hameed Benco, said the strike was driven by fears and speculations over the CPS implementation, which has been a longstanding concern for workers.
