Residents of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, have voiced strong dissatisfaction over the sharp rise in house rents and the high charges imposed by property agents in the city.
Speaking with Journal Nigeria, the residents expressed frustration, describing the situation as exploitative and unsustainable, especially in the face of current economic hardships.
A Veteran journalist Mr. Wale Rufai condemned the fees charged by housing agents, labeling them as “daylight robbers.”
He urged the Oyo State Government to intervene by regulating or even scrapping the role of agents in property rentals.
“These days, to rent a single room or shop in Ibadan, you must go through an agent, which shouldn’t be the case,” Rufai stated. “Landlords are exploiting us through these agents.”
Similarly, Mr. Kunle Adedeji, an office worker, expressed concern about how stagnant wages cannot keep up with rising housing costs. “With the current economic challenges and the extra charges from agents, it’s becoming very difficult for us to afford decent accommodation,” he said.
A local farmer, Mr. Tunji Adeyemo, also called on the government to take urgent action to address the growing crisis, noting that the burden of housing is becoming unbearable for ordinary citizens.
