A tragic explosion suspected to be caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) killed four people and left 21 others injured Friday along the Katarko-Goniri Road in Gujba Local Government Area, Yobe State.
The Journal learnt that the victims were reportedly traveling to Buniyadi Market when their vehicle triggered the explosive. The deceased have been buried, while the injured are receiving treatment at Damaturu Specialist Hospital and Yobe State University Teaching Hospital.
The attack occurred in Gotala, a community near the Sambisa Forest, a known operational zone for Boko Haram insurgents over the past 15 years.
An unconfirmed source revealed that vigilantes and military vehicles had similarly encountered buried IEDs on the same route Thursday, causing multiple casualties.
Authorities have yet to comment on the incident. Meanwhile, victims’ families are urging the Yobe State Government to urgently reconstruct the dilapidated road to curb insurgent activities, warning that both civilians and military personnel at Goniri remain at grave risk.
