The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has redirected the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority’s (NCAA) petition against Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as Kwam 1, to the Police Command at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, for handling.
Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed on Tuesday that the police received the NCAA’s petition against the singer over his August 5, 2025, attempt to block a moving ValueJet aircraft at Abuja airport — an incident that has drawn nationwide outrage and calls for his prosecution.
The NCAA had promptly petitioned both the IGP and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, urging a “comprehensive criminal investigation and appropriate prosecution” of the musician, a known ally of President Bola Tinubu who has performed at rallies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The aviation regulator also imposed a six-month ban on Kwam 1, warning that any local or international airline that carries him risks having its license withdrawn. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo condemned the act in strong terms, describing it as “unacceptable and reprehensible.”
Although Kwam 1 issued a public apology over the weekend, the contrasting treatment between his case and that of Comfort Emmanson — an Ibom Air passenger currently remanded in Lagos’ Kirikiri Correctional Centre for unruly conduct — has fuelled public accusations of selective justice.
The police have pledged that the ValueJet incident will be thoroughly investigated and justice delivered without bias.
