Imoka Festival Chaos: Police Nab Suspect in Gunfire Exchange, Officer Hospitalized

A festive celebration in Anambra State turned perilous as police arrested a 25-year-old suspect following a violent shootout during the annual Imoka cultural festival in Awka. The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident, disclosing that an officer was wounded in the exchange and is now recovering in the hospital.

According to a press statement issued Tuesday by Police Spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) launched a targeted operation to dismantle criminal networks exploiting the festival’s crowds for illicit activities. The crackdown came after weeks of intelligence indicating that armed miscreants were terrorizing residents under the guise of cultural festivities.

“The suspect, identified as Nasiru Samaila, opened fire indiscriminately while attempting to evade arrest,” Ikenga stated. “Our officers returned fire, subduing him with a leg injury. Unfortunately, one policeman sustained a gunshot wound during the confrontation but is currently responding well to treatment.”

Authorities recovered a cache of dangerous items from Samaila, including a locally made Beretta pistol, live ammunition, a knife, and a large quantity of suspected hard drugs. The arrest occurred late Monday during raids on black spots across Awka, part of a broader push to ensure public safety amid the festival’s revelries.

The Imoka festival, a cherished annual event celebrating Awka’s cultural heritage, has drawn scrutiny in recent years due to sporadic violence linked to criminal gangs. This year, police vowed to preempt disruptions, deploying covert and overt operations to safeguard attendees.

“We will not tolerate criminals hijacking our traditions,” Ikenga emphasized. “The Command remains steadfast in upholding peace and security, and we urge residents to report suspicious activities.”

While the incident has cast a shadow over the festivities, many locals praised the police’s swift response. “We want to celebrate without fear,” said Adaobi Nwankwo, a vendor at the festival. “It’s reassuring to see the police act decisively.”

The injured officer’s condition has stabilized, and Samaila is expected to face charges including illegal firearm possession, attempted murder, and drug-related offenses. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities hinting at further arrests.
