A jubilant crowd thronged the streets of Lagos on Wednesday to welcome Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their triumphant victory at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The tenth-time African champions, who touched down at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, were greeted by thousands of excited fans waving flags, chanting songs, and brandishing banners with the players’ names.
The team’s arrival came just two days after they were conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in recognition of their historic achievement.
With the coveted WAFCON trophy in hand, the players beamed as they descended from the aircraft, many taking time to interact with supporters and pose for pictures. “This is a victory for every Nigerian,” said team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who credited the fans’ unwavering support for the team’s success.
The Lagos State Government announced that a trophy parade would form a major part of the Falcons’ visit to the state. The parade, which will traverse major streets and landmarks in the metropolis, is expected to draw even larger crowds as the team celebrates with fans.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu congratulated the Falcons, describing their victory as a “moment of national pride and unity.” He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting women’s football and called on Nigerians to turn out in their numbers for the parade.
The Super Falcons secured their latest continental crown after edging out hosts Morroco 2-3 in a dramatic final, further cementing their dominance in African women’s football.
