Kano Lecturers Demand Governing Council Chair’s Removal, Oppose New VC Appointment

Academic staff at Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education Kano (YUMSFUEK) have called for the immediate removal of Professor Ahmad Adamu, Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), as Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council. The lecturers, under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), alleged a conflict of interest, claiming his dual roles have compromised transparency and due process in the university’s transition.

In a petition to the Minister of Education, the union also rejected reported plans by the Council to appoint a new Vice Chancellor without proper procedures, including the alleged reappointment of the outgoing Acting VC, Dr. Sadi Mohammed Sirajo, as Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor. ASUU accused the Council of violating the Federal Universities Act by excluding Senate, Congregation, and Convocation representatives from the selection process.

“The process was deceitful, manipulated by a biased Council that ignored statutory requirements to push a pre-selected candidate,” the petition stated. The union insisted that without these key stakeholders, the Council’s decisions including VC appointments are invalid.

ASUU further criticized Prof. Adamu’s leadership, alleging bias, incompetence, and divisive tactics. “His dual loyalty to ABU creates a clear conflict, undermining YUMSFUEK’s governance,” they wrote, demanding his removal to restore integrity.

Regarding Dr. Sirajo, whose acting tenure expired months ago, ASUU accused him of overstaying, obstructing the university’s upgrade, and suppressing dissent by withholding documents and victimizing opposing staff.

The union warned of escalating unrest if authorities fail to act, urging the Education Ministry and NUC to intervene. Neither the Governing Council nor the university administration had not responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.
