Two people were killed and another injured on Tuesday when suspected bandits attacked the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Oke Isegun in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident on Wednesday, stating that the gunmen stormed the church at about 6:00 pm while worshippers were gathered for a programme. Police spokesperson Toun Ejire-Aderemi said one of the victims, identified simply as Mr Aderemi, was shot dead inside the church.
A second victim, Mr Tunde Asaba Ajayi, was later found dead in the bush during a search operation conducted by police officers and local vigilantes. A vigilante member, Segun Alaja, sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to ECWA Hospital in Eruku for treatment.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers opened fire indiscriminately, causing panic as worshippers attempted to flee. Some residents claimed that several people, including the pastor, were taken away by the gunmen, but the police have not confirmed any abductions.
Community sources also alleged that the attackers extended the assault to the Ilorin–Kabba Road, where travellers were forced off their vehicles and into the bush.
Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, commended the quick response of officers and local vigilantes, adding that efforts were underway to apprehend the perpetrators. He said security had been reinforced in the area as investigations continued.
The incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks around Eruku in recent weeks, raising concerns among residents and prompting calls for increased security presence in border communities.
