Medical doctors employed by the Lagos State Government have strongly condemned what they described as an “illegal, hostile, and secretive” deduction from their July 2025 salaries, accusing the government of breaking trust and acting without consultation.
The protest, led by the Medical Guild, the body representing doctors in state-owned hospitals, was made public through a letter signed by the Guild’s Secretary, Dr. Adekunle Akinade. In the letter, the Guild expressed dismay that the salary cuts were made without prior notice, dialogue, or justification.
“This is a clear breach of trust,” the letter read. “We were informed that the government would engage with stakeholders over the reported salary miscalculations, but no such meeting was held.”
Describing the deductions as both unjust and illegal, the Guild emphasized that the action was a red flag capable of sparking tension within the state’s healthcare system if not immediately addressed.
Dr. Akinade warned, “The Guild’s officers’ committee views this matter with the utmost seriousness and is prepared to take every necessary step to safeguard the rights and welfare of our members.”
To determine their next steps, the Guild has convened a Representative Council meeting for Friday, July 25, 2025, where a formal response will be discussed and adopted.
While calling on members to remain calm and united, the Guild reassured them that all available legal and diplomatic channels would be pursued to ensure that the situation is resolved equitably and without further provocation from the state government.
