Lagos Lawmakers Face Legal Battle Over Alleged Financial Impropriety by Obasa

The Journal Nigeria February 28, 2025

Ola Akinwunmi

A group of lawmakers from the Lagos State House of Assembly have been dragged to court over allegations of financial impropriety leveled against the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. The lawmakers, who are members of the Assembly’s Committee on Public Accounts, are accused of attempting to cover up the alleged misconduct by the Speaker.

The lawsuit, filed by a concerned citizen, alleges that Obasa mismanaged funds meant for the Assembly’s activities, including the purchase of vehicles and other expenses. The plaintiff claims that the Speaker’s actions constitute a gross abuse of office and a breach of the public trust.

The lawmakers, who are defendants in the suit, are accused of failing to perform their oversight functions and instead, allegedly colluding with the Speaker to conceal the alleged financial misconduct. The plaintiff is seeking a court order to compel the lawmakers to investigate the allegations against Obasa and to take appropriate action.

The lawsuit is the latest development in a series of allegations of corruption and financial impropriety leveled against Obasa. The Speaker has denied any wrongdoing, but the allegations have sparked widespread outrage and calls for his resignation.

The case has been assigned to a Lagos High Court judge, who is expected to hear the matter soon. The outcome of the case will be closely watched, as it has significant implications for the governance of Lagos State and the accountability of public officials.

As the legal battle unfolds, Lagos residents are eagerly awaiting the outcome, hoping that justice will be served and that those found guilty will be held accountable for their actions.
