Madam Malinda Mgbafor Okereke, also known as Mama Nsu Bekee, the last surviving female twin rescued by Scottish missionary Mary Slessor, has passed away at the remarkable age of 115. Born in the late 19th century, Mgbafor and her twin sister, Mgbokwo, were spared from the traditional practice of killing twins in Arochukwu, Abia State, thanks to Slessor’s intervention in 1876.

Mgbafor and her twin sister were not only saved from infanticide but also received formal education at Mary Slessor Primary School, Arochukwu, under Slessor’s direct care. The twins developed a sound command of the English language, earning Mgbafor the nickname “Mama Nsu Bekee” (Mama that speaks English).

Mgbafor’s life story serves as a powerful symbol of resilience and transformation. She lived a full life, marked by strength, neatness, and joy, until her demise on March 5, following a brief illness. Her funeral service will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, followed by burial in her family compound at Amasu, Arochukwu, on August 30.

Mgbafor is survived by a son, grand and great-grandchildren, and many relatives. Her family described her as a remarkable woman who lived a long and fulfilling life.
