Makoko Demolition Victims Set For Enumeration As Lagos, Community Leaders Strike Deal

A crucial step toward resolving tensions over recent demolitions in Makoko and adjoining waterfront communities has begun, as stakeholders and Lagos State officials agreed to launch a structured self-enumeration process for affected properties.

Representatives from Makoko, Sogunro and Oko Agbon communities reached the resolution during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja.

Under the agreement, a 10-member community committee will conduct a comprehensive enumeration of buildings impacted by the demolitions. The exercise is expected to be completed within two weeks, after which findings will be submitted to the Assembly’s Ad Hoc Committee on Rules and Business for verification against government records.

Stakeholders also resolved that residents must refrain from rebuilding any demolished structures pending further directives.

Regeneration Without Displacement

Central to the five-point agreement is a commitment by the state government to regenerate the Makoko axis without displacing existing residents.

Officials assured that the proposed “Water City” initiative is designed to improve living standards, address overcrowding and upgrade infrastructure — while ensuring affected residents are properly compensated.

To improve transparency, the government also pledged to release an auto-photo map outlining the exact demolition boundaries within one month.

Community leaders acknowledged the hardship caused by the demolitions but expressed readiness to collaborate with the state to ensure a fair and orderly process.

Legislative leaders, meanwhile, urged all parties to uphold the agreement and ensure transparency, stressing that the credibility of the enumeration exercise will be key to resolving disputes and determining compensation.

The coming weeks are expected to shape the future of one of Lagos’ most iconic waterfront communities.
