Movie Review: Five Cornerstones from Jumanji

The Journal Nigeria January 15, 2025

Joshua Idowu Omidire

There are things we must never allow to get past our notice in the 2017 remake of the Jumanji movie series. The five-corner stone messages of the movie are as follows:

The Backpack

As soon as the teenagers appear in the forest, Moose Finbar (Kevin Hart) finds a backpack strapped to his back. Guess the things that are in the rucksack. Weapons. Interestingly, the weapons therein are not meant for Finbar, who is fated to carry the bag everywhere. The weapons are meant for the use of DR. Bravestone. Finbar cannot use any of the contents of the bag. In life, we are the strengths of our friends. We are meant to be their arsenal of power in times of danger or weakness.

Jumanji Jungle

The jungle is symbolic of human life. The whole of this world is a jungle. The dangerous beings that inhabit the jungle are the challenges we face on the road to our dreams. Each human being is also a representation of the jungle. Until a man tames all the animals in him, he would never achieve his dreams. Dr. Bravestone and his friends find the way to tame the jungle; that is why they can eventually get the jewel to the Jaguar’s eye.

Jumanji game

The game is another symbol of human life. Life is a game. Some lose, others win. Those who lose cannot reach their dreams before the game ends. Those who achieve their dreams before the game is over are the successful players. The game is over for different players at different times. The game is over when we die. In the movie, we see how Spencer and his friends are trapped in the game. They represent every human being. We were not consulted before we were born into this world, this game. How we play determines our failure or success.

The cake

Everyone has at least a deadly weak point. For Moose Finbar, it is cake. In the market place, he catches sight of an irresistible cake which he quickly takes and gives a bite. In no time, he explodes thereby losing a life. Something life-threatening happens when we take a bite of what we have been warned against. Just as Adam and Eve were forbidden from eating the fruits of a particular tree, Finbar was warned never to eat any cake.

Old mind, Strange body

The game players are not only lost in a jungle, they are also lost in strange bodies. The new bodies they have when they open their eyes in the jungle are in sharp contrast to their usual bodies. They find it hard to adapt themselves to the ways of the new bodies. Only the bodies changed, the minds were still the same.

Dr. Bravestone eventually aligns his mind with his new body. By the time they lift the curse and are expected to leave the jungle, Dr.Bravestone is already enjoying his new body and doesn’t want to leave anymore.Did you find more things we must never let escape our sight in the movie? Do not hesitate to write to us.
