The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is mourning the sudden death of its newly appointed Cross River State Commander, CN Ogbonna Maurice Uzoma, after he was found dead in a hotel room in Calabar early Thursday, September 18, 2025.
According to the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the late commander had resumed duty only about one month earlier—on August 18—and was staying in temporary accommodation while awaiting permanent headquarters housing.
CN Uzoma was scheduled to lead officers on operations at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. However, by 9:00 a.m., when he had not reported and could not be reached by telephone, concerns grew among his team. Hotel staff together with the officers attempted to gain entry. After repeated knocks and calls went unanswered, a hotel attendant accessed the room via a ceiling aperture and discovered his lifeless body inside.
The Cross River State Police Command was immediately informed, and the Commissioner of Police visited the scene. The cause of death has not been established; an investigation has been launched to determine all relevant circumstances.
In response to the tragedy, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), directed Zonal Commander Mathew Ewah (ACGN), of Zone 14, to relocate to Calabar to assist in the investigation.
Expressing condolences, Brig-Gen Marwa said the agency stands with the family in this difficult time, and prayed that God grants the departed eternal rest.
