The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has extended financial support to the families of two former Super Eagles captains, Christian ‘Chairman’ Chukwu and Peter ‘Dodo Mayana’ Rufai, as they prepare for their final funeral rites.
Christian Chukwu, who led the Nigerian national team to its first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in 1980, passed away on April 12, 2025, in Enugu. His final journey was marked by a week-long celebration of his life, culminating in his burial in his hometown, Obe, on Saturday. At the ceremony, the NFF was represented by the Chairman of the Nigeria National League, Chief George Aluo, who spoke on behalf of the NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau. Also present were Barrister Okey Obi, Director of Legal Services for the NFF, and Chikelue Iloenyosi, Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association.
In his tribute, Gusau lauded Chukwu for his dedication to Nigerian football, both as a player and an ambassador for the sport. Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, at a Night of Tributes held earlier in the week, honoured Chukwu further by announcing the retirement of the iconic number 5 jersey he wore for Enugu Rangers. Mbah also pledged that the state government would collaborate with both the federal government and the NFF to ensure that Chukwu’s legacy is immortalised.
“For me, and I believe for so many as well, it is difficult for you to have met Chairman without being inspired by his simplicity and humility,” said Mbah at the burial ceremony.
Meanwhile, Peter Rufai, who captained the Super Eagles during Nigeria’s historic debut in the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA, will be buried this Friday in Lagos. Rufai passed away at the age of 60, leaving behind an incredible legacy that includes a gold medal and two silver medals from three AFCON tournaments. A wake-keep will be held on Thursday evening at his residence in Amuwo-Odofin, followed by a funeral mass at the Catholic Church of Visitation in Festac Town.
The NFF will also be present at these events, with another high-level delegation attending Rufai’s burial.
