NFF Sets September 26 For Elections
Nigeria’s football governing body has set September 26, 2026 as the date for its next elective congress, following a series of significant governance decisions taken at an Extraordinary General Assembly held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) convened the assembly at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Government House, where delegates unanimously endorsed amendments to the NFF Statutes (March 2026 Edition), Electoral Code and Standing Orders, changes described as aimed at strengthening governance and transparency within the federation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Congress ratified a 12-member Electoral Committee and Appeals Committee, with representation drawn from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Both committees are scheduled for inauguration on March 25 in Abuja.
On financial governance, Ernst & Young was approved as the NFF’s independent auditor for a four-year term, selected following a competitive process that involved seven firms.
Delegates confirmed Lafia, Nasarawa State, as the host city for the 2026 elective congress, setting the stage for the federation’s next leadership transition.
A vote of confidence was passed on the NFF Executive Committee, led by President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, with delegates citing progress recorded in football development across the country.
The assembly observed a minute’s silence in honour of late football figures, including former Super Eagles Technical Director Adegboye Onigbinde and ex-captain Henry Nwosu, both celebrated for their contributions to Nigerian football.
Congress also commended President Bola Tinubu for his administration’s support to sports, particularly funding and incentives extended to national teams participating in international competitions.
The Bayelsa State Government received praise for hosting the extraordinary assembly. Representatives of FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) were present at the gathering, expressing support for Nigeria’s ongoing football governance reforms.
