The Federal Government of Nigeria on Thursday, November 27, 2025, condemned the military coup in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, describing it as a serious threat to democracy and regional stability in West Africa.
In a statement issued in Abuja by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria expressed deep concern over what it termed an unconstitutional change of government in the West African country.
The government said the seizure of power by the military was a clear violation of democratic principles and the protocols of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on democracy and good governance.
Nigeria called for the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau and urged the coup leaders to guarantee the safety and security of all detained officials and civilians.
The statement further urged all parties involved in the crisis to exercise restraint and embrace dialogue in the interest of peace and stability. It also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working with ECOWAS, the African Union and other international partners to ensure a speedy return to democratic governance in the country.
The military in Guinea-Bissau overthrew the government on November 26, 2025, a day before the expected announcement of the results of the country’s presidential election. Following the takeover, the soldiers reportedly suspended the electoral process, imposed a curfew and shut the nation’s borders.
Nigeria reiterated its solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and reaffirmed its opposition to any form of unconstitutional change of government in the sub-region.
